Step into the Medieval Manhattan of Europe
When we visit New York and walk through Manhattan, we often look up, craning our necks to catch a glimpse of the sky between towering skyscrapers. We think of this as a hallmark of the 20th century. But you might be surprised to learn that 15th- and 16th-century Europe had its own "Manhattan." You’ll be even more astonished to discover that this city was none other than Florence—a place we now know as the cradle of the Renaissance, an open-air museum, a cultural powerhouse. Yet, in its golden age, Florence was something entirely different. And we’re not sure if that version of Florence would be as charming or appealing to us today as the city we know now. But this doesn’t mean you should miss the chance to learn that:
Florence’s population once far exceeded that of Paris;
The revival of interest in Florence as a pilgrimage site for art and history lovers helped many European cities (such as those in Belgium) recover from decay and find a new lease on life at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries;
And much more fascinating information that will make your visit to Florence unforgettable, filled with insights you won’t hear anywhere else on any standard tour.
We’ll gather for dinner on the 1st of December at 7:30 PM in the heart of Florence, at what is undoubtedly the finest restaurant serving local cuisine, a place of legend with an atmosphere that perfectly captures the essence of Tuscany. Here, we’ll be among fellow enthusiasts of art, literature, history, and delicious food, ready to share stories and enjoy each other’s company.
